The old town is a great place to explore. We bought a Dubrovnik Pass and did a self guided walk based on a lot of the free attractions, stopping every now and then for a drink, or snack or icecream. There are a lot of places that are free, such as the cathedrals, market, etc. It's well worth going inside the buildings if you have time.
Otherwise, I often take Ubers around Dubrovnik when I am in a rush. But if I want to take the scenic route, I prefer to get to and from Dubrovnik by boat.
